Snowfall Derby 2011 – Halfway Home

by Mark on January 10, 2011

We received three inches of snow over the weekend. Nothing special about that, especially in January. I am pretty excited. We are now over winter’s halfway point on accumulated snow. I sense spring in the frigid air.

Weekend snow increased the season-to-date accumulated snow to 53.6”. Rochester averages 100.3” per year. We are halfway home. Pessimists remind me that Rochester dug out of 161” in 1959-60. It comes down to believing whether the shovel is half-full or half-empty.

Syracuse remains ahead in the Snowfall Derby with 80.3.” I am sure there are some Syracuse University freshmen trudging through the drifts wondering what possessed them to apply the North Pole. Buffalo remains in the drifts with only 42.4”.

I will enjoy snowshoeing this weekend, knowing the opportunities are melting. Jaymeson and I better go sledding before the hills are green.

Even this morning is spectacular. Snow is swirling in the air as the sun rises. Very few images are prettier . . . except maybe the sun rising without any snow. Like I said, we are halfway home.

It’s funny, because tomorrow we are scheduled to get around 2-4 inches here (down from the 3-6 originally expected) and I am dreading it! It’s all relative, I guess. 🙂
