Snowfall Derby 2011 – Snowplow Driver

by Mark on December 18, 2010

A few minutes before a final exam, a bleary-eyed student caught me in the hallway. It wasn’t too much studying, or too many Four Loko’s – a banned brew. Jake is a snowplow driver, who just finished a 36-hour shift. We agreed on a make-up date.

18 inches of snow pelted Rochester in 48 hours during the week we met at a Starbucks for the exam. Jake described his route of 75 driveways and one commercial parking lot. He begins at 3:00AM and it takes three to five hours depending on conditions. Imagine dodging parked cars in a snowstorm on dark streets.

Some Rocheterians choose to hand-shovel the eight to nine feet of seasonal snow. This keeps obituary writers busy. Most of us contract with a driver, like Jake. Our choice is a seasonal rate or per trip. Last year, when El Nino reduced snowfall by 20%, per trip won. This year a per trip is a big loser, given Jake shoveled each driveway six times the other night. Living in snow land is a gamble.

Syracuse took a huge lead with 71.6.” Rochester is second with 45.3.” Buffalo is sucking Jake’s tailpipe at 28”

I wished my snowplow driving scholar a good holiday. Jake smiled and shrugged. Snow is in the forecast three of the next five days.
