Scrooge Lives In Skaneateles

“Have I the pleasure of addressing Mr. Scrooge or Mr. Marley?”
“Mr. Marley has been dead these seven years,” Scrooge replied. “He died seven years ago, this night.”

Don’t look now, Ebenezer, but Mr. Marley is right behind you. It is going to be a long night for Scrooge, but a great weekend for us at the Dickens Christmas Festival in Skaneateles, New York.

Marley & Me

I am a passionate fan of The Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. It was a delight when the lakeside village began celebrating the holiday ghosts in 1994.

In addition to actors portray Scrooge and Marley, you will encounter Bob Cratchit and Tiny Tim; the three ghosts; Father Christmas; Charles Dickens; and Mother Goose. Choirs of wenches serenade as stable boys sell roasted chestnuts on an open fire.

Twice per day the acting troupe gathers to entertain shoppers with a Christmas Carol skit. Otherwise they roam the many shops in character: a grumpy Scrooge; and a goofy Marley.

Skaneateles offers a couple dozen gift shops stuffed with holiday gifts and good cheer. My favorite activity is to bundle up and walk along the shore of the prettiest Finger Lake.

The Dickens Christmas Festival runs on weekends from Thanksgiving to mid-December with a mini-event on Christmas Eve. It is free as long as you keep those credit cards in the wallet or purse – a haunting task.

It may be cold outside, but it is warm with Scrooge and friends in Skaneateles.
