President Palin?

In a couple of years on the eve of the 2012 presidential elections we may be making a choice between President Obama and the former governor of Alaska. Yesterday Sarah Palin said she’ll run “if nobody else steps up.”

Between Obama and Palin, more than a few Americans will prefer a ‘none of the above’ ballot choice. The person with the most angina seems to be Karl Rove, former campaign strategist for George W. Bush. Mr. Rove said, “There are high standards that the American people have for it (the presidency) and they require a certain level of gravitas,” Rove said, “and they want to look at the candidate and say, ‘That candidate (Palin) is doing things that gives me confidence that they are up to the most demanding job in the world.” He went on to critique Sarah’s reality show on the Discovery channel.

Welcome to the new world of social media and reality personalities, Mr. Rove. The world moved on from Floridian ‘hanging chads’ and ‘swift boat’ campaigns. Love or hate her, Sarah Palin is political brand that nurtured her image and popularity in a Proctor & Gamble manner. Palin is a kingmaker, anointing many new successful candidates in the 2010 race. She is a fundraiser, drawing millions into campaign chests as the traditional Republican apparatus sputters. Sarah Palin is an exciting draw, energizing audiences at every stop.

Perhaps many of us might desire more ‘gravitas’ in our candidates. Consider the sincerity of recent victors, like the son of a former president or a University of Chicago law professor. Perhaps Palin’s best role is to break the mold on a political process that does not work. Maybe the anxiety that she creates will focus America candidates that can solve serious problems, minimize destructive debates, and reignite American growth. That is a brand I can buy.

Barack Obama is a graduate of Harvard law school but he taught at the University of Chicago.
