Can a Mormon Be a Scout Leader?

by Mark on October 20, 2010

Are Mormons Christians? Does it matter? It matters to the Christian Covenant Church in Charlotte, North Carolina. They fired two Cub Scout leaders after discovering they were Mormon. This Presbyterian Church does not believe Jeremy and Jody Stokes are Christians.

About thirty minutes east of Rochester is Palmyra, New York where Joseph Smith founded the Mormon Church. Not all of them moved to Utah, so we know a few. They are great people and definitely Christian. I used to work for a Mormon – Kay Whitmore, the CEO of Eastman Kodak. He would not drink alcohol or cola, only root beer. How odd!

Our culture is moving more parochial and making decisions based on incorrect information and stereotypes. As a Boy Scout, my parents were thrilled when the assistant priest volunteered to be our scout leader. That Roman collar and big smile made them confident their sons would be spiritual and safe. Every time our troop went camping it was always near a pool, a lake, or a river. Every night our scout leader with the Roman collar insisted we go swimming without our suits. While no one ever accused him of anything else, he obviously enjoyed seeing dozens of naked early teens running around. How sick!

It is very important churches and parents look closely at those that will teach and mentor their children. They should interview them and talk to references. The worst thing a church or parent can do is make a decision about a scout leader or teacher based on incorrect information or stereotypes. That is how sick people get close to our children and great leaders and how mentors get pushed away. How sad!

I feel the same way about the boy scouts’ ban on gay leaders.
