A Fudgsicle Philosophy

by Mark on August 17, 2010

Everything I needed to know about business, and much of my knowledge of life, came by pedaling a steel ice cream cart through the hot and muggy streets of my hometown.

• Enthusiasm wins over the grimmest customer

• Financial success is not measured by the margin on a popsicle, but only by counting more coins at day’s end than the previous day;

• Keep it simple: cherry and orange popsicles, fudgsicles, & ice cream bars sell. More exotic treats spoil;

• The slower you pedal the more you sell. The kids must sprint, beg for coins, and return before you leave their block;

• Eating your own product swells the belly and shrinks the wallet;

• Mothers never forgive if you ring your bell’s an hour before meals;

• A storage freezer will not grow. The more grapefruit popsicles you stuff in it, the less room there is for the good stuff;

• You learn to wash your hands after counting coins when you see some of them pulled out of athletic cups;

• A free fudgsicle will not win a girl’s heart as much as a good sense of humor;

• It is the chocolate grins and orange smiles that make it all worthwhile.
