Fall From Olympus
Many are wondering why the news is focused on Tiger Wood’s personal problems while Afghanistan, the economy, and health care discussions are more important? The reason: our army, our money, and our prescriptions only impacts mere mortals. Tiger Woods is a Titan . . . a god! As in the days of the Ancient Greeks, when Zeus threw Apollo or Athena off of Olympia, the world shook. Feel the rumbles?
Who, but a ‘god’, averages 1.73 putts per hole or exceeds 300 yards per drive? How did anyone, this side of Sparta, win so many major tournaments at such a young age – leaving a former Golden Bear Olympian in the dust? Did you see him limp up the 2008 U.S. Open play-off hole with a broken leg and win the tournament? Holy Moses!
We are always looking for a special icon, one beyond our capabilities. We root, pray, cheer, cry and hope for these heroes. They do not face the mortal challenges of talent, money, family, failure or love. All of the sudden Tiger falls. Millions are shocked. We were ripped out of a suspension of disbelief. Imagine watching a movie about the Trojan War. You are there, side-by-side, with Achilles and Hector as they battle with swords and spears. All of the sudden a helicopter flies over the armies. First, you’re confused. Next, you’re disappointed. It was not real! Tiger Woods is mortal! Like all of us, he makes mistakes, disappoints loved ones and crashes into trees. No longer an icon, Tiger morphs into a talented and rich golfer – fun to watch, but not surrounded by incense. Everyone looks for a new idol. Religious leaders scream, “Come here and pray!!! Yet the pilgrimage moves to Minnesota. How did Bret Favre throw an 80 yard touchdown pass at age 40? Amazing, no interceptions in November …
